If you’re looking for a family-friendly weekend road trip from Dallas…Caddo Lake and the historic town of Jefferson, Texas, are the perfect combo for adventure and relaxation.
Sometimes, you don’t have to drive hundreds of miles to make lasting memories. This weekend, we packed up the car, grabbed snacks, charged devices (and patience), and set off on a short family road trip from Dallas to Jefferson, Texas. Just under three hours away, this scenic drive (depending on what time of the year you do it) is the perfect weekend getaway for families looking to escape the city without going too far. With a trunk full of laughter, a few family squabbles, and lots of roadside discoveries, this little escape reminded us that the best family moments often happen just outside your city. From quirky roadside diners to peaceful stretches of East Texas piney woods, every mile brought something new—and completely unexpected.
We were thrilled to discover a hidden gem tucked away in the historic charm of Jefferson, Texas. Known for its antique shops, quaint downtown, and Southern hospitality, Jefferson truly feels like stepping back in time. But the real highlight? A serene boat ride through the mossy, mysterious waters of nearby Caddo Lake—a magical experience that made us feel like we were floating through a living fairytale. For anyone planning a family-friendly road trip from Dallas, Jefferson offers the ideal mix of history, nature, and small-town magic. Whether you’re hunting for antiques, exploring bayous, or simply making memories, this is one Texas road trip worth taking.
🛣️ The Route
After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we left home mid-morning with our cups of coffee and chai, and the kids had downloaded their favorite movies to watch on the way. The drive to Caddo Lake takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic, the route you take, and, of course, the snack breaks. Don’t forget the sunscreen and bug sprays (IYKYK).
We decided to take the slightly longer route as we wanted to explore Dangerfield State Park along the way. Once closer to the state park, the flat North Texas landscape slowly gave way to tall pine trees.
This is a great park for fishing, swimming, kayaking/canoeing, and birding. You can hike, geocache, enjoy nature, or just chill by the campsite.
🌳 Daingerfield State Park
Daingerfield State Park is the perfect place to enjoy fall colors if you don’t want to drive out of central Texas. I can only imagine how beautiful the trees will look with a variety of colors, and for that very reason, we will be back in the fall.
🛶 Caddo Lake
On we drove towards Caddo Lake, one of the most enchanting and underrated places in Texas. It’s not your typical lake. Think of bald cypress trees rising from dark, still water, their roots hidden under the surface, cloaked in a green veil of moss…mysterious and majestic!
We had pre-booked a guided boat tour with a local operator out of Uncertain, Texas (yes, that’s really the name!). Our guide, a lifelong local, took us deep into the bayou on a flat-bottom boat. As we floated through the maze of waterways—names like Hell’s Half Acre and Saw Mill Pond—we spotted turtles sunning on logs, white egrets gliding overhead, but unfortunately, we didn’t see any alligators.
Our boat ride was something totally out of a movie. If you are into nature photography, this should be on your must-do list.
🎟️ Tip: Book your boat ride in advance. Evening and morning tours offer the best lighting for photos and the coolest temperatures.
After the boat ride, we thought we would do a picnic-style late lunch at the Caddo Lake State Park, but after a short nature stroll, we decided to drive to Jefferson and piled back into our car.
🏘️ Jefferson
It was late afternoon/early evening when we checked into The Carriage House Bed & Breakfast. Such a quirky place full of character. Beautiful grounds, comfortable rooms in different buildings, a warm welcome not to forget the delicious food. The only place where you start breakfast with dessert.
After checking into our room and settling in, we decided to explore what was nearby. As it was late, most of the shops/restaurants had already closed. We ended up eating at Auntie Skinner’s Riverboat Club, a 19th-century warehouse turned pub. Not the best food or the service. But did end the night by enjoying ice cream and unique flavors of soda at Jefferson General, a truly unique store with so many awesome items – gifts, soaps, jams, candies, toys, etc.! Browse nostalgic treats like pralines, jams, and sip old-fashioned soda at its vintage fountain.
After a good night’s sleep, we woke up to the amazing smell of breakfast. The Carriage House is known for offering a 3-course breakfast, starting with dessert. We told them about my son’s gluten and dairy allergies, and they customized it specifically for him. Wow!
After breakfast, we enjoyed the historic district of Jefferson, visited the Jefferson Historical Museum, and even took a peek inside the Excelsior House Hotel, where past U.S. presidents once stayed.
Jefferson, though a small town, is ideal for history buffs; there is so much history all around, and locals also told us that they have an annual Civil War reenactment every year.
🤓 Fun Fact : The annual Battle For Jefferson, a civil war reenactment is held every May.
Discover pre-Civil War homes, churches, and nearly 100 historic landmarks. Maps and brochures are available at the Jefferson Visitor Center.
Other places to check are the Jefferson Carnegie Library (built 1907), The Grove (Stilley–Young House)—a beautiful 1861 Greek-Revival home, also known for its ghost stories.
There are boutiques, art galleries, and antique shops scattered throughout town, and so many parks for kids to run around like Lion’s Club Park, Mead Park, and Otstott Park.
Jefferson trip is not complete without stopping at Red Bus Cupcakes for some yummy homemade ice cream and cupcakes. So many flavors to choose from, and they do seasonal treats too.
🤓 Fun Fact : Miss Kitty is the only English Double Decker bus that serves cupcakes and homemade ice cream in the US!
By late afternoon, we began the drive back to Dallas—refreshed, reconnected, and already planning our next East Texas adventure, but don’t forget sunscreens and big sprays for these.
