Is 2017 running a marathon?

Last I checked it was still January and we were unpacking from our trip back home. And in the blink of the eye its April?? And not the start but the tail end?

I seriously think 2017 has a hidden agenda ūüėČ

Anyways, back to the topic. Don’t you think the word “FAVORITES” is hypnotizing? Any where you read this word, you automatically have the urge to dig deep and find out the lucky winners who made this list.

I am just like you. I luuuuuuuve (yes its serious) to google/watch/read favorite stuff. Sometimes the stuff is soo real that the very next day I run to the Target nearby to get it but other times I am left confused as to why….

I also love-making small lifestyle changes which make our family happy and healthy.

For me favorites can be a product, lifestyle change, a podcast, a book or as simple as……

a  moment.

Here are some of my random favorites lifestyle/products:

Lifestyle Favorites

Every night after dinnertime, once the kids are in the bed,¬†me and my husband enjoy a cup of soothing herbal tea, sometimes with a sweet bite, other times on its own.¬† It’s the perfect way to unwind after a long busy day. This is the time where we discuss our day and everything around it. Sometimes the chai is accompanied¬†with a¬†show on TV.

My current favorite is Pukka Herbs Tea Herbal Three Fennel while he enjoys Tapal Green Tea 30 Tea Bags (Mint).

Tashakkur ¬†(Gratitude)……

Do you want to be happy, contented, healthy, optimistic???

Practice Tashakkur.

This is one habit which has brought immense positivity¬†in my life. When you take out¬†time to say “Thank You” for all the blessings in your life, no matter how insignificant, your outlook will change.

Tashakkur has a chain reaction. When you start being grateful for little things in life, the blessings keep on multiplying. You realize that you might not be the richest person in this world when it comes to money, but you are richest when it comes to contentment. A feeling money cannot buy.

At this very moment, take a look around you. I can safely say that you can find at least 5 if things, if not more, to be grateful for. The first being the ability to read.

There are many ways to show gratitude. By praying, meditating, penning your blessings in a journal etc. But the simplest way is that whenever you feel blessed or even if the thought of the feeling arises, say ThankYou God or ShukarAllah.

And now on to some of the products I am currently enjoying…

Scrub & Protect

Thanks to the unpredictable Californian weather my skin has been acting very strange. There are days when it gets super oily while on the other days its soo dry that I am one flaky mess. Also as the sun is super Sunny here, my body is now an array of colors.

I tried a couple of products but nothing seemed to fit the bill.

I am a DIY type of girl and sugar with¬†some olive oil and lemon is the best scrub on this whoooole wiiideee world¬†but sometimes a girl has no time to whip up some magical concoction and most of the times when the thought of DIY arises I am¬†already in the shower ūüôā

First time I saw Soap and Glory¬†was back in 2015¬†while walking the heavenly aisles of¬†Sephora (Don’t you love it?).

I loved the packaging but didn’t get it then and later when I went to get it, found out that they don’t carry this brand anymore. Oh well….

Time flew.

Last month while shopping at Target, I saw these cute pink packages again. I was already looking for a scrub so picked up the Sugar Crush Body Scrub and Sugar Crush Body Lotion. To be honest, I didn’t have much expectations as more pricier brands had disappointed me.

Moment I opened the jar and took a whiff, I knew ….THIS IS IT!!!

It smells like fresh lemon with the warmth of brown sugar and a musky hint of vanilla. It scrubs and exfoliates. DO not over wet the skin as the oils melt with the warmth of your hands and they will flow instead of scrubbing. If you have dry/ flaky skin you can comfortably use it 2-3 times a week. For oily skins, one a week is enough.

Follow it with the luxurious lemony, AHA fruit complex infused with kiwi water and lime seed oil Body Lotion.

You can but both these products at Target or Ulta or from Amazon by clicking the links

Soap And Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub With Smashed Brown Sugar & Lime 300ml

Soap And Glory Sugar Crush 3-in-1 Body Lotion 500ml

With Summer almost here, get ready to sweat…..

I have been religiously using Schimdt’s Deodrant for the past few years and still am their loyal customer. You can read my detailed review by clicking the link below:

I don’t know if it’s just with me or it happens with you too that when you buy the Avocados, they are usually not ripe. That simply means one thing that you cannot use them right away.

Either they are stashed in the veggie/fruit drawer in the refrigerator or if I need them sooner they end up on my counter packed in a brown paper bag with bananas. But every now and then I forget about them and when I do realize they are soo soft that¬†they end up in the trash can ūüôĀ

This recipe happened out of necessity. I had a big bowl of boring salad and some tortilla chips which needed to be finished and this time I didn’t want anything to see the dark depths of the trash can.

I tried mixing a few things and trust me, it turned out pretty good. Not only did I use it as a dressing as well as dip, but everyone in my house ended up using it as a chutney with rice and curries. Score!!!!

This recipe is pretty spicy so if you wanna tone it down, do read the notes.

Last year I said good-bye to my Teflon Non-Stick (which had become highly sticking with the silver lines running in every direction) pans and purchased Cast Iron skillet from LODGE. There are a lot of companies out now which make beautiful cast iron cookware but they are EXPENSIVE!!!

My main reasons to buy Lodge products was that firstly they are economical and secondly the quality is amazing. I have had their double play griddle/grill for over three years now and it still works great.

If you cook with cast iron you must have come across this scenario….RUST!

Does that mean you cannot use your cookware anymore.

All is well.

With a few simple steps your skillet/pot/griddle will be as good as new.

You can also use this process when you buy a new cast iron which is not seasoned or if you get a hand me down from your grand mother and you want it to shine like it did when you were young.

Now let’s get to work.

You will need:

  • Scrub Brush (I love this Scrub Brush¬†)

  • Vegetable/ Non-GMO Canola Oil

  • Salt

  • Wash the skillet using a gentle dish soap. Use a scrub brush for extra cleaning. Dry promptly using a paper towel.

  • Add two tablespoons of salt and scrub with a paper towel. (Do this step only if there is food stuck on the skillet).

Rub with Salt

  • Rub with a light layer of oil.

  • Bake it in the oven at 400F/200C for 1 hour.

There you go……

Simple right?

Now your cast iron is as good as new. Store in a dry place. Make sure to dry it promptly if you wash it. Hopefully with these simple steps taking care of cast iron will be a breeze and your skillet will enter the list of your family heirlooms.

Kitchen Handwash usually comes in Lemon scent so when I saw this new handwash from METHOD in Thyme scent I knew I had to try it.

The clear handwash comes in a 100% recycled sleek plastic bottle and is tricolsan-free, biodegradable and is derived naturally. It is infused with mint basil and thyme extracts and smells heavenly.

Unlike a lot of kitchen soaps, this will not dry your hands but will do an amazing job of removing all the lingering odors. I do a lot of desi cooking and if you do it too, then you know it’s not easy to get the garlic and onion and other spices smell out that easily. But just a pump of this thyme handwash and all the smells just vanish away and you are left with clean, fresh smelling hands. The fragrance is soo beautiful that you will find yourself smelling your hands over and over again.

So if you are looking for a nice kitchen handwash for 2017, try Method Thyme Kitchen Gel Handwash.  If you have a TARGET nearby, you can find it in store or order on their website or else Amazon Rocks!!!

5 Tips To Pick A Perfect WaterMelon Everytime

Choosing the perfect watermelon from a crate full of the green goodness is no less than having an anxiety attack. If you are lucky, you will enjoy the sweet, red, juicy goodness and if you are not (trust me we all have been there) you will be left a whopping 8-15 lbs of bland something. You will either force yourself to eat it or throw it away and in either case u will be one unhappy fella.

Let me share some tips which will help you pick the perfectly sweet and juicy watermelon every time.

field spot on watermelon

Look for the yellow spot which is also called the field spot. It should be creamy yellow which means that the watermelon had enough time to rest on the ground and ripen. Stay away from watermelon with no field spots which indicate that it was picked too soon.

Pick up  the watermelon. It should be relatively heavy for its size. This means that the watermelon is full of water and is ripe. It is best to pick up two watermelons which are approximately the same size and buy the heavier one.

shine free watermelon

Choose a dull green watermelon without any shine. The shine indicates an under ripe watermelon.

bulk watermelon

Whatever the shape of the watermelon, round, oval, long, make sure that it is free of major bruises and is firm. Symmetry is very important. Minor scratches are okay.

watermelon stem

If the watermelon has a stem, make sure it is dried out. A green stem indicates that the watermelon was picked too soon and will be under ripe.

There is one more test where people knock or tap on the watermelon to hear the sound but I stay away from it since it does not always work for me. If you are still interested, all you have to do is to give the watermelon a tap and you should hear a hollow sound which means the watermelon is ripe whereas under-ripe or over-ripe melon will give a dull sound.

Now that you know all the tips, go ahead and pick the watermelon with confidence and enjoy a juicy sweet one tonight.

Happy Summers.

10 Things You Need to know about Essential Oils

Last year we saw a boom in the Essential Oils industry. From beauty products to cleaning products, essential oils are everywhere. Every other post on Facebook or Pinterest or Instagram mentions Essential Oils. There are numerous recipes online which tell you how to incorporate them. Here are 10 things you need to know about Essential Oils.

Essential Oil is an exquisite gift from the plant kingdom. It is up to 100 times stronger than the dried herb of the same plant.  It is a highly fragrant and concentrated liquid that is generally distilled (usually by steam) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark  or both.

To give you an idea, it takes around 60,000 roses to make 1 ounce of oil. Go figure!!!

Not at all. Cooking oils are fatty oils while Essential Oils are volatile oils meaning they evaporate quickly and are not fatty in nature.

There are some instances where they can be ingested but for the moment I would stay away from it. If need arises use them under the supervision of someone who has formal training in this matter.

Diffusing, Massaging, Bathing, Compress or Mister are some of the ways to use essential oils.

¬†Don’t be tempted!!! There is no essential oil in the bottle. The bottle contains artificial fragrance with artificial products made in a way to mimic the essential oil smell.

As essential oils are very potent they¬†should be diluted before applying to the skin to avoid unfortunate reactions. ¬†This is a must with children and babies as their skin is much thinner than an adult skin. In fact reduce the amount to half when applying to children or babies and never….never use it undiluted.

If you have a health condition or are pregnant, check with your health care provider to find out which essential oils are safe to use.

Always store your oils in dark glass bottles, away from the sun to preserve their potency. Never store them in clear plastic bottles. As they are extremely concentrated and you need only a few drops, if properly stored, they do last a long time. The only exception is citrus oil which lasts for a year or two.

While there are loads of things to look out for, some of the things that I¬†have learnt over time are: buy in dark glass bottles, avoid rubber-eye dropper, make sure the label states it’s latin name, the origin of the essential oil and the method of collection, try to buy organic if you can,¬†it should smell strong and rich and not at all chemical or bland and lastly buy from a reputable source.

When I first saw the Poo Pourri spray last year at my local health store I laughed. First the idea seemed very funny to me and secondly I thought to myself how can it be better than a regular air freshener. Boy I was wrong. It works like magic.

If your bathroom has a window or any kind of vent,¬†consider yourself very lucky. It is not uncommon in America to have bathrooms with no windows.¬†Unfortunately same¬†is the case in¬†our¬†home. The bathrooms have no windows and sometimes you need a lot of air freshener to get the poo stench out as there is no outlet. Yes, there are bath ventilation fans but they don’t work that well.

After trying a lot of recipes from various websites and making some tweaks here and there I was able to make one which works like wonders. (Tried & Tested!!). It worked so well that I have a separate one for each bathroom. The bottle is so small that you can take it with you where ever you go. A good idea for your office bathroom too. Also it only costs pennies compared to the original Poo Pourri Spray.

Here is what you will need:

  • Glass Spray Bottle
  • Vegetable Glycerin¬† (For that oily film)
  • Rubbing Alcohol (To help the oils and water emulsify)
  • Essential Oils ( For the lovely smell)
  • Distilled Water
  • Food Color¬† (I would recommend using blue color)

Recipe 1:

  • 3¬†1/2 tbsp ¬†Glycerin
  • 2 1/2 tbsp¬† Rubbing Alcohol
  • 20 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 20 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
  • 15¬†drops food color
  • 1/2 cup water

Recipe 2:

  • 3 1/2 tbsp Glycerin
  • 2 1/2 tbsp¬† Rubbing Alcohol
  • 15¬†drops Lemongrass Essential Oil
  • 15 drops Bergamot Essential Oil
  • 15¬†drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
  • 15¬†drops food color
  • 1/2 cup water

Mix all the ingredients and using a funnel pour into the glass bottles. This recipes makes 4- 2oz or 2- 4oz bottles. To use, simply shake the bottle a few times (to help the oils and water combine) and spray  to cover the toilet bowl water before going No.2. The food coloring will help you see whether you have covered well or not.

The science behind it is that when you spray, an oily scented barrier is formed over the toilet bowl which helps trap the unpleasant odors underneath and there are no lingering smells.

Now its your turn. Make it, use it and let me know if it worked or not.

Top 8 Natural Brands for Home Chores

In my journey towards living a more natural lifestyle, I can safely say I have tried many products and routes. The internet, especially pinterest is full of recipes to make natural cleaning products from scratch.

With just a few ingredients you actually are able to make a big batch of product which is clean, affordable and gets the job done. If you are really passionate and have time then I seriously suggest going that route.

Now the reality….

I tried that route for a little while and was really happy but then my laziness kicked in so I had to go back to store-bought products.

My priority was that the product had to be natural and affordable. After much trial and error I was able to find out what works and what does not and since I don’t want you to go through the hassle of researching, buying and trying, I am giving you¬†a list of my favorite¬†top brands which are amazing and work wonders.

Once you try them I am confident you will forget the old conventional products.

These are the brands I use on daily basis and personally love them.

I keep on switching between them.

I will try laundry detergent from one line and dish soap from another. These products are cruelty free, biodegradable, gluten-free, chemical free and there are no artificial fragrances added to them. Most of them have essential oils and that’s why they smell so different and clean.

So here is a list (in no particular order) of my top 8 brands for cleaning around the house:

1. MRS.MEYERS : Cleaning will become therapeutic after using Mrs. Meyers products. Every product from this line does the job to its best. From basil to lemon verbena to geranium to honey suckle there are a lot of fragrances to choose from. The fragrances are natural and a little product goes a long way. My favorite is the Basil fragrance and my favorite products are  Everyday Multi Surface cleaner in Basil, Fabric softener along with the latest addition to their line  Lemon Verbena Vinegar Gel Cleaner and Baking Soda Cream Cleaner

2. SEVENTH GENERATION: The company has been delivering plant-based solutions for 27 years. It is considered to be the most trusted brand for house hold products.  Based in Vermont it is a certified B Corp which better for workers, communities, and environment. I have tried most of the products from this line and each product works better than the previous one. The products smell amazing and work perfectly. My favorite products are Seventh Generation Wood Cleaner РLemon Chamomile Р18 oz Р2 pk, dish soaps, hand soaps, cleaning wipes and their laundry detergent.

3.¬†DR. BRONNERS: 9 years ago I saw a bottle which was covered in so much text that I did not understand what the actual product was. So I put¬†it back on the shelf. When I started switching to clean products, one product which came up in every search was Dr. Bronners. So I finally went ahead and bought it. I now regret not buying it earlier. This product is so versatile that it can be used in 18 different ways from cleaning around ¬†the house, to¬†laundry¬†to self-care. If properly diluted the bottle will last you a long time. ON their website they have a chart which tells the exact dilution ratios. ¬†My favorite is the Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soap – Peppermint 32oz

4.  BIOKLEEN:  Founded in 1989, Biokleen is a family owned manufacturer of the most effective plant-based cleaning products available today. The products are concentrated to reduce packaging and shipping waste. All of the products are manufactured with 100% renewable energy offsets. I really like a lot of products from Biokleen but my favorite is Biokleen Oxygen Bleach Plus Р32 oz Р2 pk, Glass Cleaner , Dishwasher Soap and Laundry Detergent.

natural cleaning products

5.  BETTER LIFE: I  discovered this product while watching Shark Tank on TV. The crazy thing was that the company claimed its product to be so safe that the guy presenting sprayed it in his mouth. Later while shopping at Target when I saw this product, I knew I had to try it and I am soo happy that I did. Like its name,  it does make your life better or I would rather say easier. The products are plant derived and are scented using natural scents. In a very short time I have become a fan of this line. The best product for me is the Better Life All-Purpose Cleaner, Clary Sage & Citrus, 32 Ounces

6.  METHOD: This is one brand I was using unknowingly even before switching to natural products. It is available at target and is very affordable. I love their unique packaging and the best part is that they have refills for most of their products. This way you are not throwing away the bottle but reusing it which is good for the environment. My favorite from this line is their hand soaps, wooden floor cleaner,  toilet cleaner and Method All Purpose Cleaner, Lime + Sea Salt, 28 fl oz

7.¬†ECOS:¬† The first time I bought an ECOS product was from Walmart….yes you read it right Walmart. I was really skeptical if it is truly a natural product since I had bought it from Walmart but was later surprised to see the same product at a health store for a much higher price.¬†As the company’s website states, the products are powerful, affordable and family made since 1967. The packaging is neat and the product works. Do try the laundry detergent and hand wash.

8. ECOVER: It is a Belgium based company that manufactures ecologically sound cleaning products which are made from plant-based and mineral ingredients. They recently opened a manufacturing plant in Chicago. I really like the automatic dishwasher tablets and dish soaps.

Other notable mentions include Murchison-Hume, J.R. Watkins,Common Good, Honest, Bon Ami, Molly’s Suds¬†& Honest.¬†¬†The reason of not putting these brands in the top list is that either¬†I have recently started using¬† them or have used just one product from the line so it’s too early to tell if I like this brand or not. Will definitely update the list in a few months. So keep checking.

So did your favorite brand make it to the list?  Which is your favorite brand?? Any suggestions?

Till then,

Happy Cleaning
